The Prime Minister is regrettably unable to attend tonight’s event, however he has asked me to represent him on this occasion and to pass on his message to you in his stead;
“I am pleased to provide this message on the occasion of the 2013 Surf Life Saving Association Awards of Excellence.
The surf life saving movement is part of the great Australian volunteer tradition.
Since 1906 surf life saving club members have protected beachgoers. In iconic red and yellow our life savers patrol, train, educate and raise public awareness of hidden risks in our waters.
Surf clubs do so much to keep our beaches safe and do so much to give hundreds of thousands of Australians a grounding in water safety.
As a member of Queenscliff SLSC, I understand the significant role volunteers and paid patrols perform in often dangerous and challenging situations.
It is a role defined by selfless actions.
I congratulate award winners and everyone participating tonight.”
From me personally I would also like to thank the work of both volunteer and paid surf life savers as you are an integral part of ensuring that our coast remains a safe place for families and members of the community to enjoy.
It is important that we recognise the enormous contribution that you make to both our community here in Barton and the country, and these awards are testament to that contribution.
To the event’s organisers I offer special thanks, as without your hard work and dedication this awards ceremony tonight would not be the success that it is.
I look forward to meeting you all and congratulating this year’s winners in person throughout the evening.
